I discovered this barn door in an antique shop in Franklin, Tennessee. It came from a barn built in 1820. I met Sarah Cannon in 1982 while serving her at a restaurant—she was playful and asked someone to get me a sandwich so I wouldn’t faint. I adored her and wanted to portray different stages of her life. The price tag in the painting touches three hats she wears in the painting.
